dear steve

sorry to bother you.

I have always been an admirer of apples functional and beautiful design.

I’ve bought many of your products and have always been very satisfied with the overall experience. heck, I even bought a newton messagepad 120 aeons ago, go figure! ;-)

recently I’ve bought a new 2.53GHz MacBookPro, to replace my meanwhile aging 1.67GHz PowerBook. the MacBookPro is a fast, beautiful piece of state-of-the-art technology, and I like it very much.

what I don’t like is the annoying flimsyness or limplyness of it’s display hinges, which do not meet up to apples previous standards, I think. as long as the notebook rests on the desk, everything is fine, but as soon as you lift it up to carry it around – and I thought that’s what notebooks are about – and you hold it in an angle larger thant approx. 40 degrees, the display lid flaps over and the notebook tends to close completely. that is, with the notebook beeing only one week old. I don’t want to imagine how weak they could propably get, when the notebook is let’s say one year old or so.

I understand that the display lid has gained some weight because of the use of glass compared to the previous model. what I cannot accept is that a notebook that costs more than 2000 bucks suffers from such a weakness. especially when the hinges appear to work fine on the slightly smaller MacBook, which I had the chance to see at http://www.macshark.at (which is austrias largest apple premium reseller) on saturday.

Manfred Memminger of MacShark told me that there’s nothing he can do.

I’m so disappointed that I even think of reluctantly returning the new MacBookPro and try to find one of the discontinued models elsewhere.

so, my questions are: are the hinges adjustable to provide more tightness? can they be replaced for more robust ones? Is there any cure or replacement planned for this situation?

thanks in advance for your answer, and greetings from austria, europe.

best regards,

r
